those listed, many smaller collection owners also responded hut limited space
prevents their inclusion in this report. However, in fulfillment of my promise, a
copy of this preliminary report has been sent to everyone who provided information
about their own collection. . . j. ^

The purpose of this abbreviated report is to advise of progress to date and
provide an overview of how major early date collections compare to Condition
Census #1. A more comprehensive report listing varieties will be issued after the
EAC Convention. If you know of other major collections which should be included
in this on-going early date census, why not encourage participation or provide
names and addresses so that I may welcome them.

Thanks to John Wright's suggestions, our scoring system creates a balance
between completeness and condition. Score values have been determined as follows:

Completeness = 5000 f 349 (Known Early Date Varieties)
Condition = 5000 f 18095 (CC #1 Grade Total)

Dear Friends,

V/ith this issue we ccmplete the second yea.r of recording
the early dates. This is still a modest beginning hut we are
encouraged hy the progress that your cooperation has made
possible. Plea.se keep those updates coming and many thanks
for your continued efforts to enlist other major collections.

The reporting deadline for the June issue will be Ivay 15, 1983.

The discovery of the new 1801 NC5 has changed our CC#1
variety count to 350 and grade total to 18102. Since all
comparison is based upon these totals, it was necessary to
adjust scores accordingly. These changes have lowered your
score slightly but they have not altered rank position.

We are most pleased to welcome Ron Porstbauer (RA?),

Jack Robinson (JHP*), Charles Suss (CS) and Tom Wolf (TPW).

Nice going guys; it's great to have you aboard. We hope you
derive much pleasure from participation in our early date
recording circle.

Pcrty~four collections are now listed with a comoined i^o ^s.1.
of 10,311 specimens and 148,951 grade points. The average
specimen count per collection is 234.3 end tne grc:ce average
is 14.1. In addition to these totals and averages, our
overall records contain four other collections with 406
specimens and 4459 grade points. These collections will be
included in THE SCORE as soon as they qualify with the 150
minimum.

A brief review of our statistics indicates that over 90%
of the collections reported are at R4 or higher rarity levels.
The number of R3 collections may increase but the consequence
of our minimum upon the 154 varieties known at Rl, R2 and R3
is obvious. While activity at R4 is more difficult to define,
there are clearly enough specimens extant at this level to
satisfy present collector demiand than is suggested by current

high prices. It is ironic that these prices have in part
resulted from an artificial scarcity created hy duplicates
held for trading, progressive die state collections, coins
held for potential profit, etc. A little cooperation might
produce amazing results! In any case, there still are many
unreported collections out there hut the gap appears to he
closing.

We wish to assure those concerned with A.tlanta ANA-EAC
Meeting suggestions about sharing information in THE SCORE
with all EAC members that we have no intention of responding
to this request. THE SCORE is not an official EAC project,
has not applied for nor received financial support from EAC
and as such has the right to determine its own policies and
objectives. Much of the shccess which this project enjoys
is due in no small measure to our commitment that information
is shared only with other major collectors reporting under the
same circumstances. We stand by this commitment in anticipa¬
tion that we shall continue to merit your trust and cooperation

V/e try to maintain a positive attitude but it should be
noted that over 209^ of those listed have not provided an
update since their original report. A.1 though we recognize
that some of our silent friends are no longer active, many
others have simply failed to report. What's the problem?

We knew that several of you have been successful;in recent
sales. If it is too much bother for you to update, imagine
our frustration with the effort involved in recording your
early dates awa.re that the information is obsolete. THE SCORE
was started on a "give to get" information basis. We hope that
it will not become necessary to drop chronic non-reporters from
our mailing list. PLEASE! We would appreciate hearing from
you once in a while even if you have nothing new to report.
